Russian prosecutors call pipeline blasts act of terror
26-01-06 The Russian Prosecutor General's Office revised the charges in the pipeline explosions that disrupted gas supplies to Georgia and Armenia, saying the investigation now focuses on terrorism.
Two explosions ripped through a gas pipeline linking Russia and Georgia in the North Caucasus, cutting supplies Georgia and Armenia and forcing the countries to look for alternative sources of energy amid an unusual cold snap.
Earlier investigation has been based on charges of sabotage. But now, prosecutors have initiated proceedings in the case on charges of terrorism, Deputy Prosecutor General Nikolai Shepel was quoted as saying.
"In revising the charges, we proceeded from the fact that the consequences of the explosions were very serious because gas deliveries to two countries were disrupted," Shepel said.
Meanwhile, repair of the pipeline has been slowed down by low temperatures and strong winds.
