A different reality II

2007-02-27

This new issue bears again several articles and facts that touch upon different realities being at play.

One reality is that we need to reduce the usage of mineral hydrocarbon-based fuels, especially oil, due to, amongst other, the excessive harmful emissions this causes, the result of which, in the way of the planet”s response, starts to threaten the basic fundamentals of human existence: we may not only see melting ice-caps, rising seal-levels, increasing super-storms and severe droughts but also collapsing food-chains, new epidemics and massive displacement.
And all this the coming decades.

One of the responses to this is the rapid expansion of plantations for producing the basis for plant-based oils or alcohols that can be used as liquid fuels and apparently have the advantage of, net, less emissions.

The reality is that it has been discovered that the creation of quite some of the plantations needed space to grow, for which vast tracts of rainforest and other lands have been “cleared”, resulting in substantial environmental destruction and more emissions than ever will be prevented by using the fuel from the plantation.

On other places the corn used for making alcohols was taken from the stocks meant for the “bread for the people”, resulting in excessive price-rises for the basic food for millions of poor people.

As another alternative there is an upcoming weed that may be very profitable in producing cellulosic alcohols, to be used as fuel. However it will need vast tracts to produce even a remote percentage of what actually would be needed. This will cause mono-cultures and massive usage of fertilisers (made from natural gas) and weed-killers and insecticides (mainly made from oil).

Reality is that the answers may not lie where the question comes from and that the thinking that brought us into trouble, may not bring us out of it. Just keeping on going, only a bit different is not the change that is needed.

Reality is, that it is already clear this is not working.

The possible question is whether it may be the (mainly) “Western” way of living, in a “civilisation” that bases its values on consumerism, distraction and monetary worth, currently practiced by a relative minority of humanity but responsible for the majority of emissions, that may be the culprit?

May it therefore be that, next to researching for solutions to the imminent problems, we need to look at what values a human society might want to base itself upon, in the future?

Reality in the future may be very different than reality is now.

Stay open,
