Positive inclination

Almost 9 months after the high-point in the oil-history, and knee-deep in what some call potentially the greatest depression since the Ice-age, the first positive signs are appearing.

With these positive signs are not meant the first noises that “it may be over soon”, or the first profits again of some of the banks that caused most of this (as these are, looked at closely, basically fake). Much more it is the first noises of people that, due to the crisis, are finding back a human life again, after having been caught up in a life of chasing money and paying off oversized debts.

Sometimes it are the little stories that are first signs of a turn-around. This time it was a small story about Iceland, the first country heavily hit by the credit-crisis, and some of the people that now need to live on much less money. But instead of complaining about the Asian shrimps they can not afford anymore (anyway raised in heavily polluting shrimp-farms) they found back the joy of going out with the family and searching for the local clamps again, enjoying nature, as they had done for many years before the money-craze began. Or the family that now needs to live on less than half of what they had before, with both parents working overtime, but suddenly discover again how important it is to be home for the kids and give them a decent education and a stable home.

It is these kinds of small signs that give hope that from all the mess created, there may be a silver lining: people discovering again they are first human, with a life, and a right to live, before being forced in the treadmill of life, racing to fill up overdue credit-cards.

There is no doubt that this financial and economic crisis, which will extend into an energy-crisis, a leadership-crisis, with overlays of a climate-, water- and health-crisis, will cause much pain and suffering. But in the end we may see it as the turning point that brought humanity back to its senses and the realisation that there are other, more permanent values than money and luxury.
We apparently needed to discover the hard way that we can”t eat money.

We have been given life for a reason, not to produce money for others.
