Syria and Egypt agree to supply Lebanon with 600 mm cm of gas a year
09-09-09 The Syrian Petroleum Corporation (SPC), on one hand, and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), on the other, have signed an agreement under which Lebanon will receive 600 mm cm of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year from Syria.
The gas supplies will reach Lebanon through the Arab gas pipeline which crosses Jordan and Syria, according to the Syrian Ministry of Oil.
The agreement provides for increasing the Egyptian gas supplies allocated for Syria to power Dir Ali Electricity Generating Station, south Syria, by 600 mm cm, then transferring an equivalent quantity of the Syrian LNG produced from Syria's eastern and central areas to Lebanon.
The term of the deal is 15 year renewable if the concerned parties reach mutually acceptable terms 18 months ahead of the expiry date of the agreement, the statement pointed out. The agreement outlines the technical procedures and legal obligations as well as the transport fees of the gas
supplies according to the internationally-recognized fares. The fares will be reviewed periodically every three years.
Meanwhile, an official of the Syrian ministry said that experiments of pumping the Syrian gas to Lebanon started upon the completion of the infrastructure works at the Syrian gas network. The tests have been conducted this morning in the pipeline linking Hims, central Syria, and Tripoli, west Lebanon, the source revealed.
Syria expects annual revenues amounting to $ 1 mm from the Egyptian gas supplies crossing its territories, informed sources pointed out.
Egypt and Syria reached an agreement in late June providing for supplying Syrian with initial quantities of 2.5 mm cm of LNG a day that will increase to 6 mm cm in 2013.
