Ministry orders PetroVietnam to maintain power production

15-03-09 The state-owned Vietnam Oil & Gas group has to ensure fuel supply for its power plants so that it can crank up supply during the dry season, the Ministry of Industry and Trade was quoted as saying.
In a directive on March 6, the ministry told PetroVietnam to make sure Nhon Trach 1, Ca Mau 1 and Ca Mau 2 thermal power plants reach full capacity in the next four months.

Electricity of Vietnam, or EVN, said the three plants are expected to supply 5.862 tn kWh of electricity in the first half of this year, or about 14.3 % of the total national output during the period.
On March 2, EVN had warned of a possible power shortage during the dry season due to lack of fuel for PetroVietnam's power plants. PetroVietnam admitted that Ca Mau 1 and 2 could not operate at full capacity in January and February but noted it was also because EVN has cut back on buying.

EVN controls all transmission grids and retail supply while PetroVietnam supplies around 11 % of the utility's annual output.
PetroVietnam has said it will be able to meet 30 % of the country's needs in 2020.
