Duke Energy wins project from Bonneville Power Administration

01-04-02 Duke Energy's Energy Delivery Services announced that it has been awarded the first phase of a large-scale, multi-year transmission system upgrade and expansion by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). Initial work is scheduled to begin on the $ 182 mm first phase of the project in the second quarter of this year.
The BPA contract consists of the installation of approximately 155 miles of new 500-kilovolt transmission line over a three-year period. The company will be the prime contractor, providing all program management, materials procurement, clearing and environmental functions.

Procurement of the major building materials including tower steel, conductor and insulators will be made through BPA's previously established "Alliance Suppliers." Energy Delivery Services has partnered with Henkels & McCoy, with the latter company providing all construction labour, field labour management, field safety and equipment necessary to install the new towers and lines.
Bruce Williamson, president and CEO of Duke Energy Global Markets which includes Energy Delivery Services, said, "We are very pleased to have been selected for the first phase of this project. Once completed, the project will significantly enhance power transmission capability in the Northwest region." Williamson noted that both companies have proven track records in transmission line construction and program management.

The Bonneville Power Administration is an agency of the US Department of Energy. BPA supplies about one-half of the electricity used in the Northwest. Henkels & McCoy, one of the largest privately held utility engineering and construction companies in the United States, has more than 65 years of power transmission and distribution construction experience.

Based in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, Henkels & McCoy employs more than 6,000 personnel performing design, construction and maintenance of energy and communications infrastructure on a nationwide basis and in selected international locations.
