26-05-02 Hitachi and Sumitomo have been jointly awarded a 4 bn yen contract to build a power plant on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The firms will build and install 250,000 kW steam turbines and a power generator as well as perform their trial operations for Cairo Electricity Production.
The project is slated for completion by the end of August 2005.
The entire thermal power generation facility, to be constructed 20 km north of the Egyptian capital, will have a total output of 750,000 kW, the report said. The plant will be powered by the relatively eco-friendly natural gas and will combine use of gas and steam turbines to enhance efficiency.
The Hitachi-Sumitomo alliance beat competition from European and Russian firms, it said.
