06-06-02 McDermott International announces that Babcock & Wilcox Construction, a subsidiary of The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W), has been awarded a contract to erect nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction equipment at two power stations in the Midwestern US
The contract, valued at more than $ 105 mm, calls for the mechanical installation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems at Kyger Creek and Clifty Creek power plants. The work includes installation of structural steel; reinforcement of structural steel, flues, SCR reactor, catalyst, ammonia piping, process piping and service piping; precipitator stiffening and revisions to induced draft fans.
B&W is teaming with American Electric Power, Babcock Borsig Power and Siemens Westinghouse for these SCR projects. The team is responsible for the engineering, design, procurement, installation, checkout and start-up for all work associated with the SCR retrofits.
Kyger Creek plant, located in Cheshire, Ohio, generates 1,075 MW of capacity from five B&Wopen-pass units. Clifty Creek plant, in Madison, Indiana, generates 1,290 MW of capacity from six B&W open-pass units. The stations are owned and operated by Ohio Valley Electric Corp. (OVEC) and Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corp. (IKEC), respectively.
OVEC and IKEC were formed in 1952 by 15 sponsoring electric utilities in the Ohio Valley region. Parent companies of the sponsoring utilities are AEP, Allegheny Energy, Cinergy, DPL, FirstEnergy, PowerGen and Vectren. AEP Pro Serv, a technical and professional services organization that is a subsidiary of AEP, is project and construction manager for the SCR work for the two pulverized coal-burning plants, both of which began operation in 1955.
"Utilities and other power producers are continuing to face pressure to reduce emissions at their plants," said David L. Keller, B&W president and COO. "B&W Construction Company has built a strong reputation for delivering the on-time, cost-efficient and high-quality project performance needed to comply with
environmental regulations, and we are pleased to be chosen by AEP as their partner in this very important endeavour."
SCRs will be installed on all five units at Kyger Creek and five of the six units at Clifty Creek. For each unit, the outage schedule varies from seven to nine weeks. Work is scheduled to be completed by mid-July 2003.
Babcock & Wilcox is a unit of McDermott International, a leading worldwide energy services company. McDermott subsidiaries manufacture steam-generating equipment, environmental equipment and products for the US government. They also provide engineering and construction services for the offshore oil and natural gas industries.
