ENI finds oil at Goliat well in Barents Sea
28-11-05 ENI has found oil at its Goliat appraisal well in the Barents Sea, a person at one of the partner companies said earlier.
An ENI official confirmed the Italian oil company had hit the top of the structure was aiming for, but said it was too early to say the size. The person said that an oil and associated gas discovery had been made.
"They have not started logging yet, and it is too early to say for sure, but indications are that is could be around 50 mm barrels."
ENI already found oil at its Goliat field several years ago -- estimated by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate at around 50 mm barrels -- but didn't develop it because it was too small to do so profitably, the company said.
The Goliat is the first and only oil discovery in the Barents after 64 exploration wells drilled. But if the new find turns out to be as big as media reports say -- estimated at around 50 mm bbl -- industry experts say it could now be opened up for development, should the volumes be produceable.
As
operator, ENI owns 65 %, Statoil 20 % and DNO with 15 %.
