North Sea oil discovery by Norsk Hydro
Sept. 4, 1997 Norsk Hydro has made a new oil find south-west of the Heimdal field in the North Sea, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said.
The NPD said it was too early to estimate the size of the find, which would become clearer with further drilling.
Exploration well 25/7-5 was drilled 2,714 metres below sea level and showed a production rate under test of 960 cubic metres per day of oil and 81,000 cubic metres per day of gas. It was permanently plugged and abandoned.
Kama Strand, spokeswoman for Norsk Hydro, said the discovery was encouraging due to the pressure in the well. It could be large enough to develop, she said.
"However appraisal drilling is not scheduled to happen before next year due to the (tight) rig situation," she told.
Norsk Hydro is operator of licence 203 with a 35 % interest. Other partners are Statoil with 30 %, Norsk Conoco with 20 % and Amoco Norway with 15 %. Licence 203 covers blocks 24/6, 25/4 and 25/7.
