The Caspian Sea is a closed basin divided into national sectors of five neighboring countries: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan with significant hydrocarbon resources, currently estimated at 125 billion barrels (approximately 3.8 % - 4.4 % of the world's total hydrocarbon resources).
