Morocco reveals strategy to explore for oil

09-05-08 Hopes to find oil in Morocco was revived as the government has revealed a four-fold strategy to explore for oil in different parts of the country. The strategy includes boosting the promotion of sedimentary basins, developing partnerships, using new technologies on exploration, and exploiting data relating to sedimentary basins, Energy and Mining Minister Amina Benkhadra was quoted as saying.
She explained that onshore and offshore sedimentary basins are not explored enough in the north African kingdom compared to other countries, adding only four wildcat wells are drilled in 10,000 sq km in Morocco, while the international average is of 800 wells in 10,000 sq km.

She ensured that geological studies and analyses, in addition to two-dimension and three-dimension seismic tests are carried out according to international standards.
In early April, Malaysian state company, Petronas, said it was optimistic to find commercially viable reserves of oil and gas in the Moroccan Atlantic coasts. Petronas, which is making exploration operations off the capital Rabat, said the drilling is challenging, but the company remains optimistic and will continue with the evaluation of seismic interpretation based on our drilling results.

As the only north African country that does not produce oil, the economy of the kingdom has suffered a lot from the surge in global oil prices.
