Why Nigeria's power sector reform yielded no results
11-06-08 Minister of Finance, Dr Shamsuddeen Usman, identified two reasons why many reforms, including the power sector reform, have not yielded tangible results even after large sums of money have been sunk into the sectors. These, according to him, are lack of comprehensive review to understand the issues involved and lack of adequate planning to properly anticipate issues and problems that may arise in the course of implementation.
"This is what has bedevilled the power sector in Nigeria," he affirmed.
The Finance Minister made this known while answering questions put to him at the closing ceremony of the 2-day workshop on energy poverty in Africa, held at the Transcorp hotel, Abuja.
Shamsuddeen further said, "We rushed, we spent huge sums of money, yet no tangible results". He therefore asked Nigerians to be patient with the Yar'Adua administration which is doing everything possible to avoid the pitfalls of the past.
