Drilling at Iran’s Caspian blocks to start in February
26-08-05 Three-dimensional seismological operations at Iranian blocks in Caspian Sea in preparation for spudding two wells are underway and drilling operations are to begin on February 1.
Deputy minister of petroleum for Caspian Sea oil and gas affairs told that a bid is underway for choosing a foreign contractor with experience in working at deep waters and the results will be announced soon.
Asadollah Salehiforouz added that no accurate information about exact place of drilling as well as volume of in-situ oil and gas reserves is currently available.
“After drilling test well, exploration wells will be spudded at a depth of 800 m from the sea level and will continue up to 6,000 m below the seabed…. Iran Alborz semi-floating platform will bee used for drilling operations whose construction is almost complete,” he noted.
The official stated that using the most modern technology, advanced equipment and expert manpower are other aspects of drilling and exploration operations at Caspian Sea.
Salehiforouz noted that drilling at deep waters will be the first of its kind in Iran and drilling wells at a depth of more than 800 m is technically very complicated the likes of which have not been done save for a number of areas in North Sea, Mexico, and Brazil.
