Dominican leader wants oil-rich nations to help poor states
23-07-08 Dominican President Leonel Fernandez wants oil-producing countries to share their profits with poor nations hit hard by high fuel prices.
Fernandez says he supports the creation of a fund that would make at least $ 40 bn available to impoverished countries around the world. He plans to float the proposal at a meeting of nations that receive cheap fuel from Venezuela under its PetroCaribe initiative.
Fernandez said that the measure would "allow our countries to survive."
Several Caribbean nations already subsidise fuel to help residents who are also struggling to cope with rising food prices.
