Peru government issues emergency decree to guarantee supply
21-08-08 Peru's government has issued an emergency decree to guarantee power supply in the national grid (SEIN) over the short term. The decree aims to meet surging electricity demand resulting from economic growth.
The demand has put a strain on generation, in particular gas-fired plants. Furthermore, the start of the dry season will reduce hydroelectric output.
Measures include requiring state-controlled power companies to carry out bidding processes for necessary works, goods and services; and tasking national grid operator Coes Sinac with defining procedures for the rapid incorporation of additional generation units.
The decree will remain in force for 36 months.
