Brazil's energy consumption grows 6.1 % in July
19-08-08 Brazil's energy consumption reached 32,509 GW per hour in July, up 6.1 % from the same month last year, according to a study released by Brazil's Energy Research Company (EPE).
The study shows that the highest growth rates were registered in the Midwestern region with 7.7 %, the southern region with 6.9 %, and the south-eastern region with 6.6 %. The three regions were responsible for some 80 % of Brazil's total energy consumption in July.
Meanwhile, the residential sector had the highest increase rate of 8.4 %, followed by the commercial sector with 7.2 %. The average residential energy consumption totalled 148.1 kilowatts in July, with a year-on-year growth of 1.1 %.
In the south-eastern region, the growth rates of energy consumption in the residential and commercial sectors reached 9.6 % and 7.5 % in July respectively. The industrial sector in the Midwestern region saw a 10.4-% growth rate.
During the period from July 2007 to July 2008, the accumulated growth rate reached 3.8 %.
The residential and commercial sectors were the main consumers, registering an increase of 5.0 % and 4.3 % respectively.
