Kuwait and Iran yet to resolve gas field issue

29-07-08 Kuwait and Iran have yet to resolve a maritime border dispute that is blocking the development of a gas field, but talks are ongoing, Kuwait's foreign minister said.
The offshore Dorra field, also shared by Saudi Arabia, has been a bone of contention between Tehran and Kuwait since the 1960s.

"This is, no doubt, the thorn in the side of Kuwaiti-Iranian relations and we hope to remove this thorn as soon as possible," Sheikh Mohammad Al-Sabah told at Kuwait airport on his return from a visit to Iran. He said a bilateral committee was looking into the dispute.
Iran's ambassador to Kuwait, Ali Jannati, said the Islamic Republic for its part was ready to resolve the dispute.

State-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation called in July 2007 for the rapid development of the Dorra field as the Gulf Arab state struggles to meet demand for gas from power stations. The field lies on the Gulf continental shelf between OPEC producers Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Riyadh and Kuwait reached a deal on their part of the maritime border in 2000.
Jannati said he hoped to reach an agreement to export gas to Kuwait after a recent round of talks. Kuwait said earlier this month the talks were at an advanced stage.
