Vietnam says oil and gas projects are within sovereign territory
27-07-08 Foreign spokesperson Le Dung confirmed Vietnam’s sovereignty over sea areas where it is conducting projects with foreign partners in oil and gas.
"It must be affirmed that co-operative projects between Vietnam and foreign partners in the field of oil and gas, all lie within the country’s exclusive economic zones and continental shelf," said Dung.
The spokesperson was answering a question on co-operation agreements in oil and gas between the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group and foreign partners.
"They fall entirely under Vietnam’s sovereign, its sovereignty rights and jurisdiction, in accordance with the 1982 United Nations’ Convention on the Law of the Sea as well as multilateral and bilateral agreements that Vietnam has signed," Dung added.
He said Vietnam guaranteed interests of foreign investors in Vietnam.
"We welcome and create favourable conditions for foreign partners, including Chinese partners, to co-operate in the field of oil and gas on Vietnam’s continental shelf, onthe basis of observing Vietnam’s law," Dung said.
