Pakistan approves five power projects
05-09-08 The cabinet committee on "fast track power generation" cleared five power projects to generate 1,365 MW. The proposals approved are: three power projects of 929 MW capacity to be installed by independent power producers and two rental plants of 436 MW.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee held under the chairmanship of Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.
The IPPs will come up online before December 2009 and rental plants within six to seven months. The recommendation will be considered by the Economic Coordination Committee in its next meeting.
Mr Ashraf said that in order to achieve the objective of generating power on fast track, work would have to be done at war footing.
He directed the officials concerned to give top priority to completing the projects as soon as possible.
The minister directed Pepco to avoid unscheduled load shedding and ensure uninterrupted supply to consumers.
