More power in Beijing

Sept. 8, 1998 The Beijing municipal government has decided to speed up reconstruction of the city's power transmission network in order to cope with Beijingers' growing need for electricity.
The limited electricity supply has long inconvenienced the people of Beijing.
This summer Beijingers suffered from the hot weather when they were unable to use household electrical appliances requiring high voltage such as electric water-boilers and air conditioners.
The municipal government therefore decided to hasten the electricity rebuilding project and solve this problem as soon as possible.
The Beijing Municipal Government, the Power Supply Bureau of Beijing, housing units, and residents will all contribute to the financing of this project.
The Beijing Municipal Government and the Power Administration will offer loans and subsidies to the Power Supply Bureau to pay for its share of the 1.8 bn yuan ($ 217 million) cost.
Each household will pay only 300 yuan (about $ 36) for the rebuilding, and those who are without jobs or live on subsidies will be paid for by the government.
When the project is completed, electricity capacity will be doubled, and then Beijingers can expect to be more comfortable and cooler through the summer heat.
