Petroleum Geo-Services sets record and starts largest 3D seismic contract ever

Jan 15, 1997 01:00 AM

Jan. 7, 1997 Petroleum Geo-Services announced the completion of a major West African 3D seismic survey, acquired in record time by the revolutionary new seismic vessel, Ramform Challenger. The survey, acquired for United Meridian Corp. and Global Natural Resources in deep waters off the Ivory Coast, was completed in early December 1996. A total of 2,033 square kilometres was acquired in 38 days. This included an industry record monthly productivity of 1,756 square kilometres during November 1996, alone. This smashes the previous industry record by 35%. The Ramform Challenger acquired the data in an 8-streamer, dual-source configuration. Following the completion of the Ivory Coast survey, the vessel steamed to Angola to begin the largest proprietary seismic survey ever carried out anywhere in the world. The contract has been awarded by Amoco Angola BV and Elf Exploration Angola BV, with the survey covering approximately 6,500 square kilometres over deep water blocks 18 and 17. This job began in early December and is expected to take four to five months to complete, also in an 8-streamer, dual-source mode.
