Ghana signs offshore oil exploration deal

Jan 21, 1997 01:00 AM

Ghana has signed a memorandum of understanding with US Nuevo Energy Co and South Korean Youkong Limited for off-shore oil exploration in the western area of East Cape Three Points where gas was found in the 1970s. Ghana's state-run National Petroleum Company signed for the government. Its role depends on oil being found. Robert Gaston, Nuevo Energy's first vice-president, said he expected exploration and test drilling to start in the first quarter of 1997. Officials say they expect the full agreement to be approved once Ghana's newly elected parliament has debated the issue. Ghana's neighbour, Ivory Coast, already produces a small amount of off-shore oil and foreign oil companies have begun exploring for more in deeper off-shore waters.
