Iranian oil via pipeline to Mediterranean coast Turkey

Jan. 1, 1997 Turkey and Iran have agreed to build an pipeline to carry Iran's Caspian oil to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan. The agreement was reached in Tehran during a visit by Turkish Energy Minister Recai Kutan. The pipeline will also carry natural gas from Turkmenistan through Iran to Turkey. The deal is the latest in a series of friendly overtures between Iran and Turkey, where an Islamic-led government came to power in June. Turkey and Iran recently also agreed to a $ 20 bn natural gas deal and concluded several trade agreements.
