Turkmenistan to complete construction of gas pipeline to Iran by October

Jan 22, 1997 01:00 AM

Turkmenistan intends to complete the construction of a gas pipeline to Iran by October this year, despite pressure from the United States to limit economic co-operation with Tehran. Construction teams from Iran and Turkmenistan are laying the pipeline to link gas fields in western Turkmenistan with the gas distribution system in the north of Iran. It will be the first gas export line from the Caspian region to totally by-pass Russia and will form the main link in proposals to export large volumes of gas from Turkmenistan, which holds the world's fourth-largest gas reserves, to Turkey, and possibly the rest of Europe. Two billion cubic meters of gas are expected to flow in the first year of the pipeline's operation. The pipeline has a capacity of 12 bncm.
