Oil and gas seismic activity in 1996 up strongly in Canadian Saskatchewan

Dec 24, 1996 01:00 AM

Energy and Mines Minister Eldon Lautermilch said that plans submitted by oil and gas companies to do seismic work established a new record in 1996. Department staff processed 872 preliminary seismic plan applications, a 40 % increase over the year previous and almost quadruple the number filed five years ago. Applications are reviewed to ensure that companies have obtained the necessary licences. Seismic work is monitored to ensure the safety of area residents and their property, uninterrupted utility services and necessary and proper environmental protection. The monitoring involves municipalities, other government departments and Crown corporations. "The level of activity in Saskatchewan is an early indicator that land sales and drilling activity will continue to be brisk well into 1997," Lautermilch said.
