Japanese '97 polyethylene demand expected to remain high but little growth

Jan 15, 1997 01:00 AM

Jan. 8, 1997 Japanese demand for PE is expected to remain high in 1997 thanks to a slow economic recovery, but growth is likely to drop from 1996 levels. Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. forecasts demand for ldPE to grow 2.2 % year on year to 1.89 mmt, while Mitsui Petrochemical Industries Ltd. predicts demand for hdPE to rise 2.8 % to 1.23 mmt. Polyethylene exports are likely to dip slightly but remain at high levels, supported by strong demand from China and other Asian countries. Imports are expected to grow steadily, with a double-digit growth forecast for high-density polyethylene bags.
