China shows strong growth in PS demand

Jan. 7, 1997 China's polystyrene (PS) demand has been continuing to grow rapidly in 1996. It is believed that Chinese demand expanded to 1.15 mmt with the world's highest growth of 11%. Global demand for the product for 1996 is put at 8.83 million tons, up 4% year-on-year. Global PS demand for 1997 is estimated to rise 4% to 9.2 million tons. Japanese demand is projected to have suffered negative growth, reaching 1.01 mmt.
Supply capacities will be raised by a total of about 1 million tons a year throughout the world. Dow Chemical- Asahi Chemical, Chimei Industrial (Taiwan) and Chevron are due to increase Chinese capacities by 200,000 tpy in total; Mitsubishi Chemical and Denki Kagaku plan to raise ASEAN capacities by 280,000 tpy and several US makers plan to erect 300,000-tpy plants. Capacity expansions for a total of 2 mmtpy of feedstock styrene monomer will be completed by the fall of 1997 focussing on Southeast Asia.
