China into clean, durable energy sources

Jan 10, 1997 01:00 AM

In response to a rapidly increasing demand for energy, China has decided to focus its energies on the development of clean energy, through such methods as wind power and solar energy, and including the use of biomass, geothermal and marine energy. While China has a rich supply of natural gas, petroleum and coal, the stores are not limitless. According to the China Daily, of the clean energy sources, China is putting the highest priority on electricity generated by wind power, and has already established an 80,000 kW wind- driven electrical facility. And according to one source, China's potential energy generated by wind can reach 253.0 million kW annually. In 1996 the government provided about $ 96.4 mm in loans for wind generated electricity. By the year 2000, China aims at generating 1,000 MW, which is 27 times the 1995 figure. For this purpose, China has begun to call for loans, technological assistance and investment from abroad.
