Japanese petrochemical producers set output records for 12 out of 17 products in 1996, thanks to overseas and domestic demand, the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association reports. Production of ethylene was 7.13 million tons, up 2.7%. The industry body expects petrochemical production to remain strong in the first half of 1997. Shipments of polypropylene used in autoparts were the highest ever for both domestic and overseas markets. Domestic demand for polystyrene declined, but exports increased to an all-time high. Exports of polypropylene also hit a record high.
