China shortage of plastic raw materials seen to be 5.0 mmt

Jan 20, 1997 01:00 AM

China likely will see demand rise this year for polystyrene and polypropylene, and imports are seen increasing, the China Chemical Industry News reports. The newspaper urged controls on polystyrene imports in 1997 after imports of more than 1.0 million tonnes (mmt) in 1996 had pushed domestic stockpiles to about 300,000 tonnes. Domestic demand for polystyrene would be about 1.2 million tonnes in 1997 and domestic output about 300,000 tonnes, up slightly from last year, it said without giving 1996 figures.
However, rising domestic demand for polypropylene this year, estimated at 2.2 mmt, would push up domestic prices. The polypropylene shortage would be 950,000 tonnes although domestic output was expected to be 1.25 mmt, up 13.6 %, or 150,000 tonnes, from last year. China's total demand for plastic raw materials was expected to be 11-12 mmt in 1997, up 29.4 % from 1996. China's shortage of plastic raw materials would be about 5.0 mmt while domestic supply this year was estimated at 7.0 mmt.
