BP persists in Nigerian offshore drilling

Feb 11, 1997 01:00 AM

British Petroleum will press ahead with a drilling programme off the Nigerian coast despite disappointing well test results. "There is a lot of acreage on the Nigerian continental margin and we have only drilled a few wells, mostly in the shallower water," BP Chief Executive John Browne said. "Initial results are not an indication of the long-term future of the province," he added, citing as an example the North Sea where 60-70 wells were drilled before commercially viable hydrocarbon deposits were discovered. BP, which is operating in alliance with Statoil, has drilled four exploration wells on four Nigerian offshore licences as part of an eight-well programme.
