Aframax operator Teekay targets FPSO market with McDermott

Leading aframax operator Teekay Shipping is targeting the FPSO market. Vancouver-based Teekay has an informal arrangement with offshore design and engineering contractor McDermott Marine Construction to supply tankers for conversion to FPSO's. The companies have already bid on a number of oil and gas development projects in the UK North Sea. Bjorn Moller, chief operating officer of Teekay, told Teekay has worked with McDermott in the past and has had discussions about specific projects. But no formal agreement of any nature has been made nor are there any active projects at this time. Six of Teekay's aframax tankers are thought to be available for conversion to FPSO's - all built within the last decade. Sources said Teekay and McDermott had bid to supply an FPSO for Conoco's Banff oil field development in block 22/27a. However, they were believed to have lost out to a consortium of Aker Maritime, Petroleum Geo-Services and Atlantic Power, which bid a Ramform design. The two companies are now said to be preparing a bid to supply an FPSO for the 110 mm barrel Abbot oil field which straddles UK blocks 29/1b, operated by Amerada Hess, and 29/1a, operated by Shell. As with Banff, the Abbot bid will be based on converting Teekay's 106,000 dwt aframax tanker Pioneer Spirit. If the bid is successful, Teekay would be responsible for the shipwork. McDermott, a key contractor in supplying BP's Petrojarl Foinaven FPSO, would be responsible for the overall FPSO design as well as fabrication and installation of a bow-mounted mooring system. "Abbot lies next door to Banff and the oil has similar characteristics, so the topsides specifications we used for Banff will not require major changes if we bid for Abbot," a source said. "In addition, we had good results from model tests on the vessel so its suitability in an FPSO mode of operation is not in question." Bids are due in to Amerada Hess by mid-February, which will then shortlist three or four of the 20 or so qualified bidders.
