Jan 30, 1997 01:00 AM

EnergieNed, the umbrella group for the Dutch electricity distribution sector, said it will conduct a feasibility study into a Dutch electricity exchange, it wants to start next year. The Dutch hope the exchange, which will trade spot and futures contracts, will begin when the new electricity act comes into force on January 1, 1998. EnergieNed spokesman Sjoerd Marbus confirmed the study should be completed before the summer. Boudewijn van Ittersum, former chairman of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, will head the study group which will include the economics ministry, electricity producers and distributors, the corporate sector and the Amsterdam Exchanges, the recently formed combination of Amsterdam's stock and options exchanges. EnergieNed said it had recently came up with the idea of an electricity exchange in order to promote a free electricity market. It added that the initiative had met widespread support.
