Changes at hand in European Power Industry

Feb 13, 1997 01:00 AM

European industrial electricity consumers representing 30 % of the $ 50 bn annual power market due to be liberalised in 1999 say they want a single electricity supplier for all their plants and facilities across Europe. This is one of the results released of a Price Waterhouse survey of over 300 energy consuming companies in seven European Union member states in the run-up to liberalisation of the European Energy Market which will take effect January 1, 1999.
"One third of major electricity customers are looking for a single supplier for all their sites across the EU," said Graham Ward, Deputy Chairman of the Price Waterhouse World Energy Group. "Two thirds of customers put price as the key factor in choosing an electricity supplier and at present the cheapest power is less than half that of the most expensive," Ward said. Customers were firmly of the view that price will be the main influence in selecting an electricity supplier post January 1, 1999. "Combining these facts, pressure is on the European electricity industry for change once liberalisation occurs."
The total annual market for electricity in European Union member States is $ 175 bn. Approximately one-third of that, or about $ 50 bn, is subject to the European Electricity Directive. Thirty % of that figure is represented by the companies who say they prefer a single pan-European electricity .Over 300 companies in eight industries in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain were identified for the Price Waterhouse survey. The industries represented were automotive, chemicals/plastics, oil, metal processing, electrical components, pharmaceuticals, paper and packaging and food and beverage processing.
