Feb 18, 1997 01:00 AM

Feb. 9, 1997 South Korea's energy demand is expected to rise 7.2 % to 176.97 million tons of oil equivalent (mmtoe) this year from an estimated 165.02 mmtoe a year ago, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said. The ministry said in a statement the nation's 1997 energy imports were expected to reach $ 27.5 billion and exports $ 5.5 billion. Oil products consumption growth was expected to lag due to an industrial slowdown and a decline in demand from the power generation sector, it said. LNG consumption is forecast to rise sharply (-30%).
