Bulgaria and Russia in Free Trade agreement

Mar 12, 1997 01:00 AM

Bulgaria and Russia have agreed that the two countries will have free trade as of April this year and will take concrete measures to eliminate barriers to bilateral trade.
The agreement came as a result of a two-day meeting between Bulgaria and Russia on co-operation in trade, economic, military and technological fields. Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister Aleksander Bozhikov said it would be possible that Russia continues to supply natural gas to Bulgaria and the latter allows Russia to lay a natural gas pipeline across Bulgarian territory. The two sides are expected to sign a formal agreement in two weeks time, allowing Russia to lay a natural gas pipeline through Bulgaria as part of its $ 600 mm pipeline project through the Balkans.
Bozhikov said that Russia wants to take part in the privatisation of a car and oil company. In further talks it was said that Bulgaria's bid to join NATO as part of the alliance's eastward expansion would not affect bilateral relations, even though Russia is strongly opposed to Nato's plan.
