Maoming City in south China's Guangdong Province is striving to become a major local petro-chemical production base.
The city has been accelerating construction of an oil refinery with an annual processing capacity of 10 mmt, since the operation of a 300,000 tpy ethylene production facility in the city in February. A heavy-oil catalytic cracker, with a processing capacity of 1.2 mmtpy, one of the key projects during the Ninth Five-Year-Plan period (1996-2000), reported a success on trial processing in October last year. By the year of 2000, the city will have an oil refining capacity of 1.7 mmtpy. Its ethylene production capacity will be enlarged to 450, 000 tpy, and the annual ethylene processing output value will amount to 10 bn yuan.Maoming has emerged as an industrial city for the development of shale oil and oil refining since the 1950s.According to the official, the 300,000 tpy ethylene project will be able to provide the market with 890,000 tons of synthetic resin, synthetic rubber andchemical raw materials. The city has made painstaking efforts to make the ethylene project a complete success, including establishing a leading group responsible for comprehensive development of the ethylene project and related research organisations. The leading group has decided to vigorously develop the processing industry by the immediate consumption of ethylene by-products.
