Turkey has received 45 bids from 37 companies or consortia for a tender to lease operational rights of 12 thermal power plants for 20 years for a total $ 1.66 bn, energy ministry officials said. They said mostly local firms showed interest in the tender for the 10 coal-fired and two gas-fired power plants with a total power capacity of 6,723 MW.
The companies have bid for the average value over 20 years of unit energy they will sell to Turkey's state power producer TEAS. Energy officials said per kWh bid prices of electricity to be sold to TEAS ranged from 1.2 cents to 5 cents, depending on the location and modernity of the power plants.
The leases are part of a government drive to raise funds through privatising public enterprises. Participants included foreign companies like National Power , Arco, Babcock, Pacificorp, Peabody and NRG with their Turkish partners.
Officials said the result of the tender would be announced within two months.
