Japanese petchem production is spreading

Apr 15, 1997 02:00 AM

A survey conducted by the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association showed that production bases for petrochemical products, mainly ethylene glycol (EG) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), are rapidly moving abroad, though it had been pointed out that the Japanese petrochemical industry was late in global business development.
The overseas production rate rose to 39 % in EG and 35 % in PVC by the end of 1996, as a result of the establishment of production facilities in oil producing regions including Saudi Arabia and consumer regions such as Southeast Asia and the US
On the other hand, overseas production of products such as styrene monomer and ethylene, which requires huge investment in facility construction, has not shown much progress. Still, the overseas production rate is likely to grow further, as many overseas petrochemical projects are under way. The rate is the highest in EG, which is a result of large investments in Saudi Arabia, Singapore, etc. PVC production facilities have been established mainly in user regions. Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. has boosted the rate by its US production facility. Such facilities are located in Southeast Asia, etc., as well.
