Beijing attacks air pollution

Apr 30, 1997 02:00 AM

Beijing's environmental protection work this year will emphasise on air pollution prevention and control, "China Daily" reported. The Beijing based newspaper quoted mayor Jia Qinglin as saying that the municipality determines to abide by the State Council's requirements on controlling the amount of pollutant discharge and improving the urban environment by 2000.
Starting on June 1, petrol containing a large amount of lead will be banned in eight urban districts of the capital. The use of lead-free petrol is expected to reduce lead discharge into the air by 46 tons this year. It will also enable the installation of catalytic converters to remove pollutants from vehicle exhaust gases.
The city's agencies in charge of public traffic and environmental protection should also tighten inspections of auto emissions. Other causes of air pollution also will be dealt with.
Some 300 mm cubic meters of natural gas will be piped into the city from the Shaanxi and Gansu provinces in 1998, which is expected to eliminate 12,000 tons of sulphur dioxide and 36,000 tons of smog.
