China to provide 8 mm people electricity in 5 years
May 5, 1997 China has launched a "brightness project" to give 8 million people access to electricity in five years.
According to the State Planning Commission, in the next 5 years the project will provide a total installed capacity
of 400,000 to 600,000 kW of electricity for 8 million people, 10 % of the total population in China living without
electricity.
The project will make the best use of the wind and solar energy resources to produce the electricity. China has been
able to manufacture many kinds of wind- power generator sets.
China has rich wind and solar energy resources, with the total wind-energy reserve reaching 253 mm kW, and two-thirds
of the country's territory has over 2000 hours of sunshine annually.
The project is the Chinese government's response to a proposal put forward at the "World Solar Energy Summit" to
carry out the "brightness project" in the no-electricity global areas. About 77 million people in China live without
electricity, mostly in remote areas.
