MIHI claims world highest efficiency for LNG-fuelled power plant
July 7, 1997 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has attained the world's highest level of heat efficiency (49.5 %) for a
power plant fuelled by LNG, at its test facility in Hyogo Prefecture, company sources said. The firm expects the
results will enable it to develop a commercially viable, low-pollution and energy-saving power generating plant
fuelled by LNG.
The level of efficiency was achieved during 4 days of continuous operation, with temperatures boosted to 1,500
degrees C, up 150 from previous trials. The test plant has gas and steam turbines, with combined generating capacity
of 330 MW.
MIHI plans to develop a plant based on the test facility, and construct it for a thermal power station operated by
Tohoku Electric Power Co. in Niigata Prefecture in April 1998. That plant will have a heat efficiency of 51.5 %, as
it will be equipped with a heat-recycling system and a water-cooling condenser.
