June 19, 1997 Japanese polypropylene production in May was up 10 % year on year to 243,800 tons, while polystyrene output rose 1 % to 117,500 tons, the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association reported. Production of high- and low-density polyethylene's, saw output drop, to 104,200 tons, down 1 %, for hdPE and to 148,600 tons, down 9% for ldPE.
Domestic shipments of all four resins were above year-earlier levels. Market weakness seen in reaction to a temporary demand surge ahead of the April consumption tax hike ended, said a spokesperson for the association.
Exports of both PE's as well as PP firmed. Polystyrene exports were up 21 % from May 1996, but stood at only about 60 % of the monthly average from January to March, as markets in China and Southeast Asia eased. Production of ethylene, rose 3.8 % from April to 621,800 tons. Producers capacity utilisation stood at 98.4%, up 0.7 of a percentage point from April.
