Jul 29, 1997 02:00 AM

July 15, 1997 Twenty major oil companies bid recently for 12 oil and gas exploration blocks in Bangladesh. Bangladesh called for international bids for 15 blocks across the country, having earlier offered 8 blocks to foreign firms.
Officials said Cairn Energy Plc jointly with Shell Hydrocarbons Holdings BV was the top bidder, seeking exploration rights in 6 blocks. There was no bidding for blocks 1,2 and 23 in Bangladesh's north-western region, they said. They said production sharing contracts with successful bidders would be completed by December this year.
The officials said the other bidders included Chevron, Enron Oil and Gas, Texaco, Mobil Eastern E & D Inc, Unocal and Tullow Oil Plc.
