YPF moves into power generation

YPF is preparing to move in the power generation business and is aiming to reach a capacity of 1,000 MW by year 2000. Production will come from several thermal plants based in natural gas fields, which it will manage. Total investments would amount to $ 400 mm. YPF will start with a 40 MW thermal plant at Plaza Hincul to cost $ 20 mm, targeted for start-up in April 1998. YPF already runs a 20 MW thermal plant at Chiuidos, Neuquen province. Other power plants are planned to Bahia Blanca (200 - 250 MW), Mendoza (150 MW), and La Plata (150 MW).
