Japan's August ethylene production revives

Sep 18, 1997 02:00 AM

According to MITI's ethylene production report for August, the production amount reached 635,600 tons, surpassing last March's 630,000-tpy level. It is a 3.7 % rise from the previous year (9.3 % rise from the previous month). July saw exports slow and result in 580,000-tpy level, but this recovered; 2 factories were under regular maintenance in July.
Ethylene-equivalent export peaked in March at 170,000 tons, hitting 140,000 tons in July. This is because high ethylene- consumption items (LDPE and HDPE), ethylene per se and vinyl chloride monomer fell from the same month in the previous year.
Since petrochemical prices in East Asia remain under pressure and more petrochemical plants are coming on line, some foresee export will further decline.
Under such circumstances, Japan's ethylene production reached a record high again, reflecting signs of a recovery in the market situation in East Asia. As Japan exports about 25 % of its ethylene production while domestic demand is rather sluggish, ethylene producers would have not increased production without considering potential growth of the export market.
