Jan. 4, 1998 The construction of a 7 km railway section and an oil railway terminal, which have been put into commission in Dyubendy, on the Caspian Sea coast, 45 km east of Baku, cost $ 11 million.
The facilities are a trans-shipment point for oil of the Kazakh Tengiz field, which is brought from Aktau to Baku by oil tankers of the Caspian Sea Shipping Company. It is further supplied via an oil pipeline to Ali-Bairamly, 120 km south of Baku, and later on by railway to Batumi.
The current capacity of the Dyubendy station, built with the money of the U.S. Caspian Trans Co Inc, is 6,000 tonnes of oil a day. The company transports crude oil from the Central Asia to Black Sea ports. It plans to increase the annual amount of oil, which is shipped from Aktau to Batumi via Baku and Tbilisi, to 6 mm tonnes with the help of another oil loading ramp at the Dyubendy railway station.
The oil will be shipped to Batumi in evasion of the Ali-Bairamly oil terminal, which started transportation of the Tengiz oil to the Georgian Black Sea coast in March 1997. All in all, 595,000 tonnes of oil have been transported.
A total of 2,200,000 tonnes of oil will be sent in that direction from Baku and Ali-Bairamly, according to General Director of the Azerbaijani Main Oil Pipelines Company, Tofik Akhundov. The transit of oil via the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijani territory costs $ 15 per tonne. The Caspian Sea Shipping Company and the Azerbaijani railway will receive $ 6 per tonne each, and the rest will go to the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic.
Azerbaijani President Geidar Aliyev attended the opening ceremony of the oil railway terminal and estimated it as a notable event in the life of the country. He stressed the importance of contacts between republican institutions and foreign companies, which are taking part in the development of the Caspian resources and the local infrastructure, for the consolidation of the Azerbaijani economic potential and the development of regional transportation routes.
