Oilcompanies doing well in Latin America

Petroecuador is the fifth most profitable firm of Latin America's top 500 companies, according to a survey published by "Economics America" magazine.
The survey noted that Petroecuador made profits of $ 974.1 mm in 1996, ranking it fifth in terms of profitability.
Its sales were in the region of $ 2,992.2 mm, placing it thirtieth on this measure, and twelfth overall.
PDVSA was ranked first overall, with sales of $ 33,855 mm and net profits of $ 4,495 mm.
Ecopetrol, Colombia's state oil company, also performed strongly, doubling its sales during 1996 to $ 4,030.7 mm.
