Feb 10, 1998 01:00 AM

Jan. 5, 1998 Northwest China's Shaanxi Province plans to invest 2.55 bn yuan ($ 300 million) to launch a comprehensive pollution control project, the largest environmental protection project in its history.
The funding, including a loan of $ 156 mm from the Asian Development Bank, will be used for environmental improvements in the cities of Xi'an, Xianyang and Tongchuan.
The effort will consist of six sub-projects -three heat supply projects; two urban natural gas pipeline projects; and a dust treatment project for a large cement plant in Tongchuan.
Related projects will reduce air pollution, conserve energy, promote the use of clean fuel, improve environmental management and continue the move towards energy pricing based on the market.
They would also replace 515 obsolete boilers and domestic furnaces with modern, efficient plants and district heating systems, substitute the use of coal for natural gas in 130,000 households, and reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide by 37,000 tons annually.
